Agios Voukolos Church

"The church situationed in the Basmane Kapilar district of Izmir, is one of the two Orthodox churches survived unscathed from the 1922 Izmir fire. The church has an important place in city culture and was built in the memory of Agios Voukolos by the Greek Orthodox Community in 1887. This is the only Orthodox Church of the region with the form of cross. The building had started to serve as ""Asar-i Antique Museum"" in which artefacts and historic foundations of the Izmir region and the surroundings were exhibited with the order of Ataturk in 1927. Then, its name got changed to ""Izmir Archaeology Museum"" and continued to serve as a museum until 1984. The decorations and wall paintings of the building are remarkable.
The restoration work that had been initiated in 2009 with the support of grant provided by the Izmir Special Provincial Directorate of Administration as a result of the request of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, was completed in July of 2010. The main church building and outbuildings were repaired within the restoration works preserving their original patterns. Especially, the main church building which had experienced the fire, was strengthened by reinforcements.
The interior walls of the church were washed with paint scraper and original surface has been revealed. As a result of these works, depictions of the Archangel Michael, the Archangel Gabriel, Pantokrator Jesus and Agios Voukolos were found on the walls of the church. All unique and original plaster and motifs were preserved and only cleaning, strengthening and partial retouching were performed for the interior walls. All these works were conducted under supervision of specialists and carried out by an expert team. Along with the restoration work of all buildings, the landscape of the building was completed and this place has been put into operation as a social activity center."
